1961,
a
group of Christians began meeting at Smyrna
Elementary School with a common goal of beginning a new Methodist church
to serve the Highview area. Their sights were set on a 3.6
acre parcel of land along the sparsely populated
Outer Loop that had been donated for such a
purpose by Joe Fish.

1962,
37 families stepped Forward
By Faith and began building that church. A 21-year old
recent seminary graduate, Tom Owens, was
appointed by the conference as the first pastor.
"Summit Heights" was selected by the
37 charter families as the name of the church,
presumably because of the elevation of the
Highview location.

1974,
the
congregation had grown. Again they stepped Forward
By Faith and began
building a new sanctuary and remodeling the existing
building into an education wing.

1984, additional acreage
was purchased.

2000, the
congregation again decided to step Forward
By Faith and build a
Family Life Center.
